The miter cut is any angled cut made along the face of a piece of wood, with the eventual goal of making that cut into a corner. In order to make a precise miter cut, you need a specialty miter saw.
In this article, we are going to review five miter saws and tell you which of the five is the best miter saw. We also have created a buying guide to help those who are new to the world of power tools to pick out a miter saw of their own. For those who can’t wait, we recommend buying the DEWALT DWS709 Slide Compound Miter Saw.
A Spotlight On Some of The Best Miter Saw 2019
Miter Saw Reviews:
DEWALT DWS709 Slide Compound Miter Saw
Anyone who knows anything about power tools will be intimately familiar with the name DeWalt. For decades now, DeWalt has produced very high-quality power tools, and this miter saw is no exception. Firstly, it has the sort of power that you would expect out of a high-quality DeWalt tool. The motor is 15-amps and it outputs an impressive 3,800 rpm. While power isn’t necessarily the most important thing to look for when getting a miter saw, having a good amount of power certainly isn’t a bad thing as it means that you can cut through tougher pieces of wood and finish jobs a lot faster.
Another great feature of this DeWalt is that it comes with a well-designed, tall fence. This is important because a taller fence allows you to cut longer pieces of wood easier. It also comes equipped with DeWalt’s exclusive back fence design, which again makes it easier to cut longer, bigger pieces of wood.
Another good aspect of this saw that we need to highlight is the large bevel scale. This will stand out to veteran miter saw users because they know the importance of a good bevel scale. The good-sized bevel scale on the DeWalt allows you to easily set the exact angle that you want your blade to cut at and it is just very easy to read on the fly because of its size.
In terms of the miter scale, the DeWalt is well-equipped because it comes with a highly adjustable, stainless-steel miter plate that has ten different positive stops.
In terms of durability, it is difficult for us to say how long this miter saw will last, especially because everyone treats their saw differently. However, we can say that the saw certainly feels very durable. You can tell that it has been built with a lot of care and that it is just solid all around. You definitely won’t need to be replacing this saw anytime soon, especially if you perform basic maintenance.
Finally, we want to make a note of two things before we move on. First off, this is not a costly saw by any means. In fact, given the usual price of miter saws, this one is actually very affordable, especially given the quality of the saw that you get. Secondly, the miter saw’s dust collection system is bad, to say the least, so you will either want to buy your dust collector or get used to sweeping up a lot of sawdust.
So, as you can see from our review, the DeWalt DWS709 Slide Compound Miter Saw definitely lives up to the reputation established by other DeWalt tools and it belongs on any best miter saw list.
Great bevel and miter scales.
15-amp motor that is capable of outputting 3,800 rpm.
Dust collection system leaves a lot to be desired.
Bosch 120-Volt 12-Inch Dual-Bevel Glide Miter Saw GCM12SD
With our next entry on our best miter saw list, we are featuring yet another miter saw from a very famous tool company. When it comes to power tools, Bosch is almost as famous as DeWalt. Also, much like DeWalt, Bosch has a well-deserved reputation for putting out quality power tools of all kinds. This miter saw is no exception.
In terms of power, the miter saw is quite powerful. As you can see from the product name, the Bosch is powered by a 120-volt motor, which is definitely more than enough power for any miter saw.
One of the main draws of this particular miter saw is the variety of cuts that it can make. It comes with a 14-inch horizontal cutting capacity, a close to 7-inch vertical cutting capacity, and a close to 7-inch crown cutting capacity. By making use of all three of these, you can make a wide variety of cuts with this miter saw. It goes without saying that being able to make a wide variety of cuts is important, as you will never know when you need to do a project that may require a wide variety of cuts.
Making complex, accurate cuts is even easier when you also consider that the miter saw comes equipped with a very good handle. It may sound like a minor feature, but the presence of a good, comfort grip handle is important. It prevents your hand from getting sore and it gives you good control over the saw blade.
Another thing that makes the Bosch miter saw very useful is the very adjustable bevel and miter scales. Both of those are very well-made and they make the process of making complicated cuts a lot easier.
If you already have a very crowded workspace and you aren’t sure if you can fit in another tool, then you will be interested that this Bosch miter saw is actually incredibly compact. So, even if your workspace is already quite a bit crowded, you can still easily find a place for this.
Very long cutting capacity.
120-volt motor provides more than enough power.
Able to make a wide variety of cuts with ease.
Hitachi C10FCG 15-Amp 10″ Single Bevel Compound Miter Saw
So far, we have featured two very high-quality miter saws on this list (which you would probably expect given that it is a best miter saw list). However, with this next entry, we are giving you a very affordable miter saw that still offers decent performance. The Hitachi C10FCG 15-Amp 10″ Single Bevel Compound Miter Saw is an amazing option for those on a tight budget, but who still want a decent miter saw to add to their collection.
The obvious number one attraction of this miter saw is the affordability of it, so that is what we are going to discuss first. Now, on our best miter saw list we have featured some saws that are considered “affordable.” But the Hitachi miter saw isn’t just “affordable,” it is downright cheap. Miter saws are not nearly as common as table saws or circular saws, so to see one being sold for this cheap and from a relatively well-known brand is quite impressive.
The saw is also very compact, so if you already have a very full tool shed, you can still afford to give this one a go, both because it is cheap and because it is small enough to fit into even the most packed garage or shed.
The motor on the saw is also surprisingly powerful for a very cheap saw. The Hitachi is equipped with a 15-amp motor, which is on par with the motors in other, more expensive saws. That 15-amp motor also translates to a surprisingly high rpm. This makes for fast, efficient cutting. It also means that you spend less time cutting, and more time enjoying your finished project.
Also, again very surprisingly, the saw comes with both a laser and a dust collection system. We say surprising because these are the sorts of extra features that you wouldn’t expect to find on a “cheap” miter saw like this. However, while it is great that these features exist, we should mention that they aren’t of the greatest quality. For example, the dust collection system isn’t very good, and the laser is a bit dim, but the fact that they are even included at all is impressive.
Where the Hitachi truly shows its price is when it comes to the blade. The blade is very cheap and not all that precise. This is a very common issue with cheaper saws.
Powerful 15-amp motor.
Blade is very cheaply made.
Laser is a bit too dim.
collection system isn’t very good.
Festool 561287 Kapex KS 120 Sliding Compound Miter Saw
Although Festool isn’t as famous of a name as DeWalt or Bosch, they probably should be as they can produce quite a good miter saw, as evidenced by the Festool 561287 Kapex KS 120 Sliding Compound Miter Saw.
Firstly, despite being somewhat small, this is actually a great option for cutting larger pieces of wood. This is due to the fact that this is a sliding miter saw. The blade can slide out when you cut, which makes cutting longer or larger pieces of wood easier.
Another great thing about the miter saw is the ultra-precise bevel scale that it comes with. By using the easily accessible knob on the front of the miter saw, you can easily adjust the bevel scale of the saw.
The Festool comes with not one, but two lasers. The lasers are incredible, they are easy to see and easy to use. The presence of two lasers is not only a lot more convenient, but it also makes the miter saw as a whole a lot more accurate.
The miter saw as a whole is incredibly well-made. From the blade to the base, the whole saw is really made with care and we definitely feel that this saw will stay in good condition for a very long time.
Sliding blade allows you to cut longer pieces of wood.
Dual lasers for increased accuracy.
Very precise bevel scale.
Extremely durable and well-made.
Craftsman 10″ Single Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
We have come now to the last miter saw on our best miter saw list. For the last entry, we are deciding to focus on the Craftsman 10″ Single Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw, which must like the last miter saw, is from a lesser-known brand. Also, much like the previous miter saw, this one is still very good despite coming from an unknown brand.
By far the most notable thing about the Craftsman miter saw is its power. Previously, the most powerful miter saw on our best miter saw list was capable of putting out roughly 3,800 rpm. The Craftsman is capable of putting out roughly 4,800 rpm, so about 1000 more rpm, that’s a very impressive power increase.
This is a sliding compound miter saw, so you are able to use it to cut through longer pieces of wood. It is also very affordable for such a high-quality sliding compound miter saw.
The blade on this miter saw is actually very good. A lot of miter saws try to save money by including a lesser-quality blade, but not the Craftsman. The blade is very good, and it shouldn’t need to be replaced anytime soon.
The only real issues with the Craftsman miter saw are that the blade size is a bit small (10-inches vs the more standard 12-inches) and that the whole thing is a bit heavy and big, making it a bad choice for already crowded workspaces.
Powerful 15-amp motor that outputs around 4,800 rpm.
Good laser attachment.
Blade is a bit on the small side.
Miter Saw Buying Guide
In the introduction to this best miter saw article, we mentioned that in addition to the reviews, we were also including a buying guide. Well, here it is.
In this buying guide, we are going to explain why you need a miter saw as well as what to look for when buying a miter saw. As you can probably guess from that information alone, this buying guide will be heavily geared towards people who aren’t familiar with power tools.
Obviously, those who are familiar with power tools already don’t need to be told what a miter saw is for or what to look for when shopping for one.
Why You Need A Miter Saw
The reason for need a miter saw is relatively simple, you need a miter saw to make angled cuts. You could technically make angled cuts using a regular table saw or circular saw, but it would be incredibly difficult and the margin for error would be quite high.
A miter saw makes making angled cuts a whole lot easier. Angled cuts are essential for making corners and are thus also essential for complex woodworking projects like furniture, cabinets, frames, molding, etc.
What To Look For When Shopping For A Miter Saw
Accuracy is the most important thing to consider when shopping for a miter saw. There are a couple of things that go into determining whether a miter saw is accurate or not. First off, there are the bevel and miter scales. You want to make sure that the scales included on a miter saw are good, as that makes accurate cutting a lot easier.
Another factor to consider is the fence on a miter saw. Longer fences make it possible to accurately cut longer pieces of wood.
Lasers are also something that needs to be given consideration when evaluating the accuracy of a miter saw. Lasers make accurate cutting a whole lot easier. You can buy your own miter saw laser attachments or you can buy miters saws that come with the lasers already built-in.
You probably saw that quite a few of the saws on our best miter saw list had built-in laser attachments. Make sure that the laser works and that the beam that it gives is very clear and easy for you to see.
While power isn’t the most important thing with a miter saw, it is still pretty important. Higher power means that you can cut through tougher pieces of wood and it means that you spend less time on a single job. The power of a miter saw can be measured in a variety of different ways. You can measure it by the amps of the motor, the voltage of the motor, or the amount of rpm (revolutions per minute) that the saw can put out.
Dust collection may not sound like a big deal at first but trust us when we say that it is very important. Nothing is worse than completing a big job, only to have to spend more time sweeping up a ton of dust. Make sure that whatever miter saw that you buy has a good quality dust collection system, it will make your life a lot easier.
With the end of our buying guide comes the end of our best miter saw article. We hope that you and others will keep the conversation going.
